It’s That Time of Year Again: 2014 Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches
By Delaney W. October 13, 2014
It’s that time of year again. The cold weather is setting in, warm sweaters are being dug out from the backs of closets, and spiced drinks are being consumed. It’s time for a fresh start, for change. And with the changing of the seasons comes a different sort of change. Yes, it is time for America to elect a new president.
On October 10th, 2014, presidential candidates Alejandro Torres of the Green Party, Democrat Cassidy Bouchard, and Republican Scott Hamlet delivered their nomination acceptance speeches.
Torres delivered a powerful speech, making excellent use of rhetoric. He believes that America has waited too long to act on pressing issues. He boldly stated that as president, he can reform the country and therefore, the state of the world. Torres promised that if he is elected as president, he and the Green Party will create more jobs for all. He additionally promised that he will break down the barriers of inequality in this country. Torres wants the United States to be an example for the world to watch, and he believes that in order to accomplish this, Americans must “take a step in the right direction” and “go green.”
Bouchard reminded her audience of the American promise; the American dream. She stated that the failure to acknowledge huge problems, such as economic turmoil, war, and problems with education, is an indication of the broken down politics of this country. Bouchard believes that Americans are better than this, and that the current election is a chance to keep the promise of the American dream.
Hamlet started off by acknowledging the other candidates, who, he claimed, helped him to achieve nomination. He stated that he will lead Americans to a better future by reforming the country. Hamlet vowed that he will confront unemployment, job security, and rising health care issues. He hopes to create stepping stones for a better education for the generation to come. Hamlet also hopes to unite Americans despite their differences, and he wants to reach out to those in need.
Will Americans “go green” with Torres? Will they keep the American promise with Bouchard? Or will they follow Hamlet to a better future? Come November, we shall see what Americans decide.
2014 Presidential Debate
By Delaney W. October 15, 2014
What happens when a donkey has a spirited dispute with an elephant? How about when a donkey and an elephant deliberate with…. Darth Vader and Jaws? This was the scenario at the October 15th, 2014 presidential debate. The gloves came off, the gauntlet was thrown down, and the candidates made their positions known as the debates got under way.
Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the debate was the presence of the Green Party’s candidate, Alejandro Torres. As a third party, the Green Party is normally “standing on the sidelines”, too weak and small to get far. As of late, however, the Green Party seems to be more organized and growing stronger. This is not to say that the Green Party will actually win the election, yet it is interesting and unusual that the Green Party is doing so well.
Scandalous information came out during the debate about a past relationship between Republican Scott Hamlet and Democrat Cassidy Bouchard. According to Bouchard, about three or four years ago, she was in a short relationship with Hamlet. Bouchard stated in a calm and collected manner that they mutually decided that they were better off as friends, and that there are no “hard feelings” between them. Hamlet, however, had different view on the matter. Hamlet claimed that Bouchard was “cutting him down” and that she “broke his heart”. In the end, however, Hamlet admitted that Bouchard has become one of his very good friends.
Interestingly, Hamlet agreed with Bouchard on several points. On the topic of abortion, Bouchard believes that every woman should have the right to choose. According to Bouchard, if a woman feels unfit to be a mother and does not feel comfortable with giving her child up for adoption after birth, then that woman should not have to give birth to the child. Bouchard feels strongly about abortion after rape. She believes that a child from rape is a reminder of the horror that the victimized woman had to experience. Contrary to the usual Republican platform of pro-life, Hamlet agreed on both of these points, stating that if a child comes into the world and will have a horrible life because its family is not ready or fit to care for it, then abortion is acceptable. Hamlet further stated that rape is one of most horrifying things that can happen, and he agreed with Bouchard that if a child is born from rape, the victim would have to see that child everyday as a reminder. Hamlet addressed the fact that he is making statements that are the complete opposite of the usual Republican pro-life platforms by stating that, although he is Republican and should be opposed, he feels that one should not have to completely agree with every party idea.
The debate began to heat up when questions on immigration arose. Bouchard feels that immigrants should be welcomed into the United States because “they will find a way in no matter what”. Torres believes that immigrants should be allowed to be protected citizens and given job opportunities. He does not want immigrants to be punished for trying to pursue a better life by coming into the United States. Hamlet believes that illegal immigration is called illegal immigration for a reason, and therefore he feels that amnesty should not be granted to illegal immigrants. He feels that “those people don’t belong in America” and that they are “taking all of our jobs”. Bouchard questioned Hamlet, stating that Hamlet is attempting to make it illegal for Mexicans to have a chance at a better life by coming into the United States. Hamlet simply replied, “It should be illegal.”
“Legalizing marijuana would be very beneficial to the U.S.,” claimed Torres. He feels that the economy would benefit from a tax on marijuana. He also feels that it is ridiculous to arrest people for carrying marijuana, and that it is as if people are being arrested for carrying herbs. He stated that the age limit on marijuana should be 18 years of age, because the human body is still developing as an adolescent, yet the age limit should be lower than that of alcohol because, as he put it, alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana, and there are longer lasting effects with alcohol.
In her closing statement, Bouchard brought up the Ebola dilemma. She believes that people traveling from Africa into America should not be allowed into the United States until they have been tested for disease. Hamlet incorrectly stated that Ebola is an airborne disease. It, in fact, is a blood-borne disease. Nevertheless, Hamlet is concerned that Ebola could potentially spread quickly in the United States and he feels that people who may be infected should not be allowed into the United States. Torres stated that Ebola has been a problem for a long time and that thousands of deaths due to Ebola in Africa have been overlooked. He feels that it is our responsibility to help Africa with this dire situation.
It would seem that Hamlet is “leaning towards green”. Hamlet believes that hydraulic plants could be replaced with the surplus of coal, which, he stated, would be cheaper, more effective, and would create more jobs for Americans. Torres, however, disagreed. He doesn't feel that coal is the most effective option, but that wind and tide and solar energy is better.
Torres ended with the statement that there is a notion that there can only be two candidates for election. Americans like to compete, and Torres believes that the best way to compete is to include more than one party. Torres suggested that America votes for a new party to create a healthy environment for the future.
Americans have a difficult decision to make. The donkey, the elephant, and Darth Vader and Jaws all have differing views. No matter what decision is made, reform is clearly visible in the not-too-distant future for America.
2014 Presidential Press Conference
By Delaney W. October 23, 2014
Americans have met the presidential candidates. Perhaps Americans have already formulated an idea as to which candidate they may vote for. However, do they truly know their presidential candidates? Who are they, really? Would they be able to hold up under the pressure of presidency?
Democrat Cassidy Bouchard was the subject of interest at the start of the press conference on October 17, 2014. She showed up late, barely making it in time for her turn. Bouchard claimed that her absence was due to the need for her to drop off her two younger cousins at school. She also claimed that family comes first, even before presidency.
Two propaganda against Republican Scott Hamlet were brought up during the press conference. One was a mugshot in which Hamlet sported a nasty cut and black eye, which he allegedly got from a fight after a drug deal went wrong. The other depicted Hamlet as a devil, and the caption explained that Hamlet was seen wearing a Monster energy drink shirt. Apparently, the Monster logo represents three sixes, which is recognized as the Devil’s number. In response, Hamlet admitted that he had worn a Monster shirt, which, he claimed, is a common type of shirt. He also claimed that research shows that the Monster logo does not, in fact, represent three sixes as some previously believed. Hamlet insisted that the mugshot was fake. He is a 4.0 student, and apparently that means he does not even know how to get himself arrested.
Bouchard and Hamlet have similar views on the Ebola pandemic. Hamlet wants to monitor people coming into the United States. Bouchard wants to test every plane coming into the United States from Africa. While Bouchard wants to focus on eradicating Ebola in the United States, Alejandro Torres of the Green Party wants the opposite. He believes that it is time to do something about the thousands of deaths due to Ebola in Africa. About the nurse from Dallas who contracted Ebola, Torres thinks that she should be quarantined. Hamlet wants to get the names of everyone on the flight that the nurse had taken and test them for Ebola. Those who have it need to be quarantined, and those who don’t need to be watched carefully, according to Hamlet. Torres thinks that those who were on the same flight as the nurse are safe from Ebola because the nurse did not have any symptoms, and therefore was not yet contagious. Bouchard believes that temperature tests in airports are not effective for Ebola because symptoms can appear after Ebola is initially contracted.
Hamlet was raised with a Christian background. He therefore believes that marriage is a holy union between a man and a woman. He also believes, however, that a gay couple can be together, but marriage, being a holy union, is reserved for heterosexual couples. Bouchard put it this way: marriage means you love the person you are with. Marriage is not just for a man and a woman. Everyone has the right to love whomever they want. Torres’ view is the same. He stated that everyone has the right to marry the person they love.
Each candidate had very similar views on gun control. None of the candidates want to completely eradicate guns in the United States, but rather, they want to tighten gun control. Torres wants more restrictions. He wants to test people to see if their mind is stable. If their mind is stable, then they should be allowed to own a gun, because, according to Torres, “people don’t just go crazy”. Hamlet believes in the right to bear arms. He stated that guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Therefore, he wants more background checks, specifically for behavioral issues and when and why the person went to prison. Lastly, Bouchard also wants more background checks. She wants to check people’s mental state and past incidents.
The time to choose the next president is near. Perhaps, now that Americans have learned more about each of the candidates, they are now able to make a sound decision as to which candidate to vote for.
Crisis Press Conference

What is juicier than presidential scandals? Americans live for things like this, and will love to learn about the juicy secrets that our three presidential candidates have been keeping.
On October 29th, 2014, a press conference was held to discuss leaked information about scandals among Alejandro Torres of the Green Party, Democrat Cassidy Bouchard, and Republican Scott Hamlet. Some very interesting points were brought up.
Alejandro Torres was seen picking up a young homeless hippy and taking her home to his 5 acre farm, where he grows massive amounts of illegal marijuana for the biggest drug dealer in North America. He reportedly gave her 5 brownies, and she apparently still can’t say anything other than “green” over and over. Torres admitted that he had picked her up, but he claimed that she is an old friend. He gave her a place to sleep and get back on her feet. He claimed that the brownies were leftovers from earlier, and he admitted that he enjoys making brownies in his free time. When questioned about this, he said that he never said what kind of brownies. He also said that his dog’s name is Green, and his friend had been playing with the dog.
Cassidy Bouchard was accused of leaving threatening voicemails containing profanity on a former friend’s phone. Apparently, the voicemails were sent because the friend had gossiped about Bouchard’s past relationships and drinking problem. Bouchard first addressed the drinking problem, asserting that she doesn’t have a drinking problem and never drinks. She came from a drinking family, and she doesn’t want to follow in their footsteps. She admitted to leaving voicemails on a friend’s phone, but she didn’t mean for them to be threatening. She was only frustrated. This issue was between her and her friend, and she wanted to confront the problem.
Scott Hamlet apparently ordered his bodyguard to send a woman named Pink Diamond to his house when his wife was grocery shopping. Hamlet was heard saying, “Pay her well.” He then came running out of his house with powder on his face, and he tripped and fell. His mugshot of his bruised face was later discovered. Hamlet claimed that Pink Diamond has a cooking show named Sparkles, and that she was helping him bake a cake for his wife. He, of course, wanted to pay her well for this service. She allegedly left her phone in his house, so he ran out, flour coating his face, to give it to her, and he tripped and fell. Apparently, the mugshot was a fake. He claimed that a photographer had taken a well-timed photo after he got up from tripping and photoshopped it.
After all of this scandalous information, are any of these candidates worthy of becoming the next President of the United States? Perhaps these things do not affect their abilities as politicians. Either way, things in this election are heating up, and it will be very interesting to see who wins.
Closing Speeches
By Delaney W.
November 2, 2014
The time is near. The campaigning is beginning to wind down, and the voters are making their final decisions. The presidential candidates gave their closing speeches on October 31, 2014, in an attempt to attract a few more last minute voters.
Democrat Cassidy Bouchard claimed that, while her opponents focused on attacking herself and each other, she focused on helping Americans. However, the rest of her speech made references to her opponents that made them look bad in order to make herself look better. She stated that Americans can count on her in times of crisis, and that she’s very passionate. She ended by saying that she will relight the pathway to America’s glory.
Republican Scott Hamlet quoted former president Ronald Reagan, “We act today in order to preserve tomorrow.” Hamlet believes that it is time for change, and that Americans would have the power to make change with him as president. He also believes that the current government is in the hands of corrupt authority, and that this authority is stripping Americans of their rights and facilitating fear. As president, Hamlet promises that he would preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. Then, Hamlet made an interesting statement: go green today to save the environment. Sure, it’s great that Hamlet is for making greener choices, but will it help him gain more votes to sound like the Green Party? Honestly, it only makes him sound lazy for not coming up with an original slogan. Hamlet ended his speech by saying that a vote for him is a vote for a better today and a greater tomorrow.
Alejandro Torres of the Green Party started off with a series of rhetorical questions. Will Americans vote for a safe world? A world that isn’t polluted? Will Americans vote for equality, for women to choose, for everyone to love whom they choose? Will Americans vote for world peace? Torres encouraged his audience not to make the same mistake they have been making for years by voting for one of the same two parties that have done them wrong. He encouraged his audience to make history by voting for the Green Party.
Voting begins on November 3, 2014. Each of the candidates has done their best to sway the voters. Now the future of America lies in the hands of the American people.
